Digital Thermometer Guide: Types, Accuracy, and How to Use Them

Kapag may lagnat ang bata mo sa gabi, ang huling gusto mong gawin ay maghanap ng instructions. Kaya ito — ang lahat ng kailangan mong malaman tungkol sa home thermometers.

Types of Digital Thermometers

Contact Digital (Pencil Type) — used orally, rectally, or underarm. Most precise: ±0.1°C. Takes 30–60 seconds. Best when precision matters most.

Infrared Forehead (Temporal Artery) — scans the temporal artery. Quick (1–3 seconds), non-contact. Accuracy: ±0.2–0.3°C. Affected by sweating and cold exposure. Great for quick checks and sleeping children.

Ear (Tympanic) — measures infrared from eardrum, which reflects core body temperature. Fast (1–2 seconds). Accuracy: ±0.2°C. Not suitable for newborns (ear canal too narrow) or when ears are infected.

4-in-1 Thermometers — combines forehead, ear, underarm, and object modes. The BeHealthy 4-in-1 Thermometer covers all measurement methods in one device — practical for families with members of different ages.

Which Is Most Accurate?

  1. Rectal — gold standard (not practical for everyday use)
  2. Ear — excellent, reflects core temperature
  3. Oral — very accurate when done correctly
  4. Forehead — convenient but technique-sensitive
  5. Underarm — reads 0.5–1°C lower; add 0.5°C for estimate

Fever Thresholds by Age

Age Group Fever Threshold Action
Under 3 months 38°C Seek care immediately (all fevers in newborns)
3–6 months 38.5°C+ Seek care if above 39°C or looks unwell
6 months–2 years 38.5°C+ Seek care if above 40°C or persists 48h+
3–17 years 38.5°C+ Seek care if above 40°C, seizure, or stiff neck
Adults 38°C+ Seek care if above 39.5°C with severe symptoms
Over 65 37.8°C+ Lower threshold — elderly immune response may be blunted

How to Get Accurate Readings

Forehead: wipe sweat first, hold at correct distance, wait 30 minutes after outdoor exposure, take 2–3 readings and use the highest.

Ear: pull ear back-and-up for adults, back-and-down for children under 2. Insert snugly pointing slightly forward toward the eye.

Contact/pencil: for oral — under the tongue, mouth closed. For underarm — against skin, arm pressed to body. Wait 30 minutes after eating or physical activity.

Maintenance and Hygiene

Clean after every use with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Store in its case away from heat and sunlight. Most digital thermometers are self-calibrating — if you suspect inaccuracy, verify against another thermometer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: My child’s forehead reading is 37.8°C but they feel very hot. Should I trust the reading?
A: Forehead readings can underread when taken incorrectly or when the forehead is sweaty. Take an ear or underarm reading to confirm.

Q: Can I use the same thermometer for underarm and oral?
A: Yes — clean and disinfect the probe between uses. Many parents keep separate thermometers for hygiene reasons.

Q: Is a 38.5°C fever dangerous?
A: Fever itself is a normal immune response — the concerning element is what’s causing it. A 38.5°C fever in a 2-month-old is very different from the same reading in a healthy adult.
