What Actually Matters in a Student Stethoscope
The diaphragm (the flat side) picks up higher-pitched sounds — breath sounds, normal heart sounds, bowel sounds. The bell picks up lower-pitched sounds such as murmurs. A single-head model leaves out half of what you will be asked to identify.
The eartubes must angle forward, following the direction of your ear canals. If they point straight back you will hear almost nothing regardless of what you paid. This is the most common reason a student thinks their stethoscope is faulty.
Around 27 inches suits most users. Longer tubing lets you stand further from the patient but slightly dampens sound; much shorter forces you to stoop over the bed.
