Normal BMI pero malaki ang tiyan? Many Filipinos carry extra weight around the middle even at a normal BMI. Belly fat is closely linked to diabetes and heart disease, and all you need to check it is a tape measure.

How to Measure Your Waist Correctly
Halfway between your lowest rib and the top of your hip bone — not over your pants' waistband.
Measure at the end of a normal breath out. Do not suck in your stomach.
Snug around the body but not pressing into the skin.
Measure in the morning before eating, and repeat monthly to track change.
Why It Can Beat BMI
BMI uses only weight and height, so it cannot tell muscle from fat or show where fat sits. Fat around the abdomen is the type most closely tied to type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. Asians, including Filipinos, tend to develop these problems at a lower BMI than Western populations, which is why a waist check adds useful information. See our BMI chart for Filipinos (Asian standards).
Waist circumference cut-offs for Asians: the WHO Asia-Pacific and International Diabetes Federation criteria use 90 cm (35.4 in) for men and 80 cm (31.5 in) for women as the point where risk rises.
Not for everyone. The ratio is designed for adults. It is less reliable in pregnancy, for people with very high BMI, and for some athletes. Talk to your doctor about what your numbers mean for you.

Divide your waist measurement by your height, using the same units. For example, an 80 cm waist and 160 cm height gives 80 ÷ 160 = 0.5.
Keep your waist below half your height. At 155 cm that is under 77.5 cm (30.5 inches); at 165 cm it is under 82.5 cm (32.5 inches); at 175 cm it is under 87.5 cm (34.4 inches).
It adds information BMI misses, because it reflects fat around the abdomen, which is closely linked to diabetes and heart disease. Using both gives a fuller picture than either alone.

WHO Asia-Pacific and International Diabetes Federation criteria use a waist of 90 cm (35.4 inches) or more for men and 80 cm (31.5 inches) or more for women as the point where health risk rises for Asians.
